How to put the 'ease' in Seasons of Change

We are always going through Seasons of Change. Sometimes they can feel big and overwhelming, other times it’s just another change and when you look back you realise it was actually a pivotal transitional period in your life, although it might not have felt like it at the time.

Just like you, throughout my life I’ve gone through many Seasons of Change. My parents got me comfortable with things always changing by relocating us interstate six times before I was a teenager! (They would always call a ‘family meeting’ and there would be lollies in the middle of the table- that’s how I knew we were moving again. Luckily lollies are no longer an emotional trigger for me lol).

Aside from all the interstate moves (of which I’ve done more of since becoming an adult), some of my greatest and most challenging Seasons of Change are listed below:

  • Getting my first job

  • Graduating high school

  • Starting university

  • Graduating university

  • Moving into the corporate world

  • Buying land and building a house

  • Getting engaged and then married overseas

  • Adopting two greyhounds

  • Trying to conceive and falling pregnant

  • Preparing for and giving birth

  • Entering motherhood

  • Leaving my job of 13 years

  • Starting my own business

When you think back on your life so far, what are the big moments, milestones, seasons or times of transition that you’ve moved through?

Each one has shaped you into the person you are today and the ones yet to come will continue to bring new challenges and triumphs that will add more colour and depth to the picture of your life.

Below are my top three tips for how to put the 'ease' in your Seasons of Change.

1. REFLECT

Journal through the change. When you’re in the thick of it you can feel as if it will go on forever, but one day you will look back on this period of time as merely a moment... a dot-point like my examples listed above. It’s great to have something to refer back to, to remember the lessons and of course the feelings of elation and achievement. Not only this, but if you journal during the time of change, it can help you make sense of and move through it with more ease and grace in the moment. Change is HARD, but it can be softened if you get all those thoughts, worries and 'what ifs' whirling around in your head, down on paper.

2. REACH OUT

Seek support from others. You don’t have to go through these times of change alone. Even if you are experiencing the change with someone else (for example moving overseas with a partner) it’s likely your experience will differ slightly from theirs. They might be thriving from the unknown, whilst you’re slowly spiralling at the thought of not knowing where you’ll be living a week from now. Reach out to your support network and talk through your experience. They might offer some words of wisdom, but even if they don’t, verbalising your thoughts and experiences will help you move through them quicker and more smoothly and feel held while you do.

3. REMEMBER YOUR WHY

If you only take one tip from this blog- take this one! Why are you making the change? In the above example of moving overseas with a partner, is it for a work opportunity? A new adventure? A change of scenery? To experience something exciting together? When times are tough and you’re doubting your decision, always come back to your why and remind yourself of the reasons you’re going through this change. This will help prevent you from getting ‘stuck’ and keep you moving positively through this season. You can even write/draw or collage your ‘why’ and stick it somewhere visible in your space, to remind yourself daily. If you'd prefer a digital approach, you could make a Pinterest board or create a wallpaper background for your phone or laptop as a powerful reminder of your 'why'.

Well, those are my tips, I hope you find them useful. I'm sending you all the good vibes to move through whatever season of change you go through next with total ease- it looks like mine is going to be yet another interstate move!
